Associate Underwriter - Brookfield, WI Office

Position Summary:

Conducts comprehensive risk assessments for our trust carriers to optimize revenue and minimize risk, ensuring adherence to NIS group underwriting standards.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Underwriting Authority as determined by the underwriting supervisor to reflect knowledge and ability.
  • Evaluate, price, and strategize to acquire prospective business and renew existing block of business.
  • Adhere to NIS’s underwriting goals and guidelines while working with partner carriers.
  • Assure accurate and timely quote rates for manual-rated prospects that reflect appropriate rates, benefits, and plan design.
  • Prepare, evaluate, and re-rate renewals and Rate for Change requests for manual-rated cases by applying a thorough analysis of the group’s risk characteristics, including claim experience, industry, geographic location, size, and demographics.
  • Ensure premium adequately reflects the group’s risk, and that language complies with filed contracts and NIS underwriting guidelines.
  • Coordinate necessary changes with appropriate internal departments based on issues found during sold case and renewal evaluation.
  • Responsible for effective Underwriting account management to help ensure success, profitability, and retention of accounts for NIS and our trust carriers.
  • Develop in-depth knowledge of contract provisions, OCI statutes, insurance laws, and mandated benefits corresponding to benefits provided.
  • Develop an effective working relationship with other members of the NIS Underwriting department, partner carriers, and other NIS departments.
  • Utilize resourceful and innovative solutions to complete a variety of special underwriting projects as necessary.
  • Stay abreast of group insurance developments and innovations through industry courses and publications.
  • Adheres to the Employee code of Ethical Conduct.
  • Completes special projects and other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree to include course working in Math, Statistics, Insurance Business, and Communications or the equivalent as gained through related experience is required.
  • Experience in a group life and disability insurance environment is desired.
  • Competent knowledge of Microsoft Office products and ability to work with homegrown applications is required.
  • Must be well organized and detail oriented.
  • Demonstrate problem solving ability and strong analytical skills to gather and summarize data.
  • Effective oral and written communications skills and human relation skills are essential.
  • Must have a high level of interpersonal skills, and the ability to demonstrate poise, tact, and diplomacy.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle and prioritize multiple, competing tasks and demands, and to seek supervisory assistance as appropriate.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Consistent daily attendance and the ability to work overtime occasionally at last minute.
  • Minimal travel may be required.

Normal Working Hours and Days:

Monday through Friday; 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (or as mutually agreed to by the parties); 1 hour lunch; overtime as required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Position is primarily sedentary in nature with relatively equal amounts of sitting, standing, and walking.
  • Infrequent light physical effort may be required.
  • Ability to travel by car, plane, or other common means of transportation.
